Hunting and Calling Varmints in the 21st Century

    Speaker: Gary Roberson, Burnham Brothers

    *Rescheduled from March*

Morton Burnham is known as the “Father of Predator Calling” as he used his hand to lip squeak and call up fox, bobcat and coyotes.  Burnham Brothers, the oldest game call company, was established in 1952 and is owned by Gary and Deb Roberson. Burnham Brothers developed mouth blown calls, recorded actual predator and prey sounds for records, 8 track, cassette and digital electronic callers.  Burnham Brothers truly is “The Originator, Not The Imitator”.

Gary was raised on his family's ranch in South Texas where he began hunting at an early age.  While growing up, his heroes were not the usual Bart Starr or Don Meredith, rather Winston and Murry Burnham of Marble Falls, Texas, the greatest hunters and game callers of all time.  Burnham Brothers makes the “Callingest Calls Made” that are known the world over for quality and results.

Living on a ranch allowed Roberson to hunt on an almost daily basis and he took advantage of the situation.  He killed his first buck at age seven while hunting by himself, began calling varmints at age ten and maintained a pack of bobcat and coon hounds at age 12.  It seemed that if there was an excuse to go to the woods, Roberson would find it.

Gary rates coyote calling as his favorite hunting, however, he enjoys any hunting that involves calling an animal.  He is a strong believer that “he who hunts the most, hunts the best” and lives by that motto.

Roberson and his wife, Deb have three sons Clint, Tom and Steve.  The eldest, Clint, is the three time World Champion Deer Caller.  The Roberson’s purchased Burnham Brothers Game Calls from Murry Burnham in 1991.  Gary was instrumental in developing the Model 10 Predator Hunter with Savage Arms and the Coyote Special rifle scope with Nikon Sport Optics, two products specific for the predator calling game.  Gary's common sense philosophies on calling and hunting will increase your chances for success.

Gary Roberson is the host of the wildly popular TV show, CARNIVORE.  A fast paced, cinematic, predator hunting show that is now airing it's 11th season.

    Fishing in Corpus Christi

    June 5-7, 2022

    $250/per person
(does not include food, drinks and live bait)

Club members, Spence Collins and Kevin McConnell, will captain their boats to help us locate the fish. In addition to the two of them, there is room for 7 more anglers.

This is not a guided trip. This is group of friends getting together to go fishing.  Meaning, they are supplying the boats, we are supplying the fuel.  There are two houses we can rent to provide everyone with a place to stay.  House rentals, house cleanings, and fuel, the estimated cost to each angler is $250. Additional costs would be your food, drink, and live bait if you want it.

Bring your rod, tackle and gear for wading.  If you don’t have something, let us know and we may be able to find you something to borrow.

The idea is to drive down on Sunday, June 5th.  Fish on Monday, June 6th  and Tuesday, June 7th.  Then drive back home on Tuesday evening, June 7th.

    Kayak Fishing in Aransas Pass

    Saturday, July 16, 2022

    Guide: Fil Spenser
Fil is an awesome guide who works hard to get you on fish.

Inshore fishing artificial lures in the Lighthouse Lakes or the islands/flats behind Brown Root for trout, flounder, and redfish.

If you don’t have a kayak, no problem! Use of one of Fil’s is included in the price along with gear and lures. You are welcome to bring your own.

Cost per angler is $150 (plus room and meals).

This trip is limited to 10 anglers.

Additional Details from Richard Hallum - AWWC Chief Warden - Fishing

Once I know how many people are going, I will find lodging for everyone at a local motel.  When I’ve done this in the past, typically you are looking at a room range of $75 - $150 per night.  If you put two to a room, that cuts the cost in half.

The idea would be to drive down on Friday (during the day or evening, depending upon your schedule), meet up with everyone for a dinner that evening, and get ready for fishing the following morning.  On Saturday morning we fish with Fil. Saturday afternoon, come off the water and:

      1)      Head home.
      2)      Go have lunch and then head home.
      3)      Go have lunch, stay to fish the afternoon/evening on our own, and go home the following morning (either when we get up or after going fishing on Sunday).

If you decide you’d like to stick around and extend your trip (option 3), you’ll need to bring your own gear and kayak.  And let me know ahead of time so I can arrange a room for you.  If you don’t have a kayak, and you wish to extend, there are places down there to rent a kayak for a small fee.  But again, you need to bring your own gear.

Please do not let the idea of paddling a kayak scare you off from this trip.  These are “sit on top” kayaks, not “sit in” kayaks.  So, it’s like sitting in a really shallow canoe.  However, unlike a canoe with a rounded bottom that tip over easily, these kayaks are designed for stability with more of a catamaran shaped hull to put the buoyancy on the sides of the kayak.   And even if you did turn one over, the depth of the water we are fishing is only a few feet.

Additionally, we are not talking about paddling hours to get to the fishing waters.  We are talking about minutes.

If you have any questions about this trip, please contact me at 512-695-2372.
